Catalog published by the Galerie Dina Vierny on the occasion of the Robert Couturier exhibition - The Poetry of Bodies presented at the Donjon de Vez from June 20 to July 19, 2025.
Considered one of the most important sculptors of the post-war period in France, alongside Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier, Couturier left his mark on his time with a unique body of work that was both inherited and profoundly innovative.
Couturier reverses the codes of traditional sculpture: instead of adding, he removes, hollows out, and removes to create an "open form" where empty and full complement each other. This approach, which he calls "anti-Maillol," gives his figures a dimension that is both poetic and metamorphic, where perception changes depending on the angle of vision.
The twenty or so monumental sculptures gathered at the Donjon de Vez thus revealed a creator who, far from pomposity, sought a sensitive truth. Between presence and absence, balance and lightness, Robert Couturier's work inscribes sculpture in the life and poetry of everyday life.
