This book was produced by the Dina Vierny Gallery in June 1985 to coincide with Ilya Kabakov's first solo exhibition.
Ilya Kabakov, a Russian conceptual painter, follows an artistic tradition influenced by Marcel Duchamp. Duchamp was the first to show that art does not necessarily rely on a physical medium but can emerge from an idea. This bold approach, where abstract thought animates objects, profoundly impacted art history. Duchamp believed that the idea, the "cosa mentale", becomes a work of art in itself.
