Charles Pollock was born on December 25, 1902, in Denver, Colorado. The eldest of five boys, he spent his childhood in the American West. In 1922, having decided to become an artist, he left his family for Los Angeles, where he enrolled at the Otis Art Institute while working for the Los Angeles Times. It was there that he discovered the Mexican muralists and the work of Thomas Hart Benton, whose student he became in New York in 1926.
