This catalogue was published by the Dina Vierny Gallery in 1970 to coincide with an exhibition of Henri Matisse's works on paper.
"Matisse said that the ‘revelation’ - as he called it - of what his art was to be came to him one day when, as a young student at the Ecole, he was waiting for a telephone call in a post office.
Machinically, he was pencilling on a form lying on the table, when he saw his mother's face appear on the paper, real in a way that none of the objects he had represented according to academic rules had ever been before."
