Catalogue of the exhibition "Maillol Sensual" presented at the Dina Vierny Gallery from March 15 to May 18, 2024.
"All of Maillol's work seems to be the fruit of a single obsession. Nothing captivated him as much as the female body. He never tired of seeing them walk through the streets of his village, or even more, bathing in the sea. This is what he tells Henri Frère in a memorable scene from Conversations de Maillol: ‘I waved to you. You didn't see me. A little girl passed by with thighs the likes of which I have never seen! [...] The most beautiful thighs I've ever seen: young, round, fat. Just what I've been dreaming of all my life. All my life I've wanted to make legs like that, young legs. I've worked all my life for that. But I've never quite achieved it...’. I think that this scene (there are a number of them in the book) encapsulates the whole of Maillol: the voluptuous man who desires, and the artist who struggles to turn this vision - this desire - into a work of art, in other words, into research, a form and an architecture".
