André Bauchant (1873-1958) is one of those French painters who should be called "modern primitives" after having long been called "naive painters." Alongside landscapes of Touraine, paintings of flowers and birds, he painted poetic and mythical visions. A horticulturist by profession, Bauchant began a career as a painter at the age of 46. His work is marked by his close affinity with nature and his passion for antiquity and mythology. He exhibited for the first time in 1921 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, attracting the attention of Le Corbusier and Amédée Ozenfant. Le Corbusier then became his mentor and a passionate collector of his works. In 1927, Sergei Diaghilev, founder and director of the Ballets Russes, commissioned him to design the sets for Igor Stravinsky's ballet, Apollon musagète, which premiered in 1928. In 1948, the Galerie Charpentier in Paris organized the first retrospective of his work.
Henri Rousseau's greater fame has unfairly overshadowed the second generation of painters, who, alongside Bauchant, include Bombois, Vivin, Rimbert, and Seraphine de Senlis. This catalogue raisonné offers, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Bauchant's painted oeuvre, thus placing him in the position he deserves.
