Initiated as early as the 1920s in Los Angeles through his contact with engravers Franz Geritz and Arthur Millier, printmaking accompanied Charles Pollock throughout his life and held a central place in his work. From his first figurative experiments to the abstract explorations of his mature period, the artist consistently explored different engraving techniques, to the point that his catalogue raisonné now lists over a hundred. This dimension, extended into his teaching at Michigan State University then vigorously revived after his Roman stay in 1964 with the Post-Rome series, reveals a particularly free, intimate, and inventive aspect of his work, where drawing, rhythm, and the emergence of forms found a privileged ground for expression.
