Model and muse for Maillol, resistance fighter, collector, and gallery owner, Dina Vierny turned her life into a true novel through sheer willpower, enthusiasm, and freedom. Born in 1919 near Odessa, she immigrated to France, where her parents' home became a meeting place for the Russian intelligentsia in Paris. At the age of sixteen, a friend remarked on her resemblance to Maillol’s sculptures, leading to an invitation to his studio in Marly-le-Roi. There, she encountered Van Dongen, Vuillard, Le Corbusier, Gide, Valéry, Bonnard, and Matisse.
In 1940, Dina was in Banyuls-sur-Mer posing for Maillol while also visiting Marseille, where André Breton and his circle had taken refuge. She became involved in emigration networks for European anti-fascists. Arrested in Paris by the Gestapo in 1943, she was saved thanks to Maillol, who sought the intervention of Arno Breker, the official sculptor of the Third Reich. Supported by Matisse, Dina opened a gallery in 1947, where she organized Poliakoff's first exhibitions and showcased artists such as Dufy, Kandinsky, Laurens, and Picasso.
In 1964, Dina donated 18 monumental Maillol sculptures to the French state, which André Malraux, Minister of Culture, installed in the Tuileries Gardens. Finally, in 1995, she inaugurated the Dina Vierny Foundation - Maillol Museum.
