This comprehensive monograph is dedicated to Aristide Maillol, a French sculptor of the highest importance, whose famous bronze silhouettes of women, housed in the world's greatest museums, are characterized by their massive volume and the simplicity of their forms, a prelude to abstraction and modern sculpture.
Regarded as one of the most remarkable sculptors of the 20th century, Maillol (1861-1944) created an original style by simplifying form, abolishing movement, and rediscovering a simplicity of lines and volumes in contrast to the academic style.
Starting from his early years as a painter (a promising career that was prematurely compromised by an eye disease in the late 1890s), this book invites the reader to explore Maillol's career, admiring his numerous masterpieces, from small carved wooden bas-reliefs to the early small bronze sculptures of the 1900-1905 period, as well as the monumental works of the following years, which brought him success and recognition among both his contemporaries and later generations.
